"My daughter has been having piano lessons with Toby Johnson and absolutely loves piano as Toby makes the lessons fun, yet pushes her enough to make progress with his encouragement " (Egham)
I offer professional, friendly piano lessons for students of all ages and abilities in the Chobham and Egham areas of Surrey. Lessons take place in your own home, providing a comfortable, familiar and convenient learning environment that helps students feel relaxed and focused from the very first session. Home-based piano tuition also removes the stress of travelling, making lessons easier to fit into busy family or work schedules.

I teach both children and adults, from complete beginners through to more advanced players. Whether a student is starting from scratch, returning to the piano after a long break, or looking to refine their existing skills, lessons are always tailored to suit individual needs. I understand that no two students are the same, and I take great care to adapt my teaching approach to match each learner’s personality, pace and musical interests.

Lessons can be shaped around a variety of goals. Some students learn purely for enjoyment and personal fulfilment, while others wish to build confidence, improve technique, or work towards graded piano examinations. I also support students who want to develop specific skills such as sight-reading, rhythm, coordination, or musical expression. Whatever the aim, lessons are structured to provide clear direction while remaining enjoyable and motivating.

A strong technical foundation is an important part of my teaching. Students are guided in developing good posture, hand position and finger technique, helping them play comfortably and efficiently while avoiding unnecessary tension. Alongside this, I place great emphasis on musical understanding, encouraging students to listen carefully, read music fluently and develop a genuine appreciation of different styles and composers. Sight-reading skills are built gradually and confidently, enabling students to approach new music with assurance.

I have an excellent record of examination success, with a 100% pass rate across all students entered for exams. The majority of my pupils achieve Merit or Distinction results with Trinity College London, reflecting both their commitment and the structured preparation they receive. I also have experience preparing students for Rock School and ABRSM examinations, allowing flexibility to suit different musical tastes, whether classical, contemporary or popular styles. Exam preparation is thorough but never pressured, ensuring students feel confident and well prepared on the day.
Lessons are carefully structured, encouraging and engaging. Progress is made at a steady, achievable pace, helping students build confidence while maintaining motivation. I believe learning should be enjoyable as well as effective, and I aim to create a positive atmosphere in which students feel supported and challenged in equal measure. Clear guidance is given during lessons, along with regular feedback to help students practise effectively between sessions.

For children, lessons are designed to be stimulating and age-appropriate, helping them develop concentration, coordination and listening skills while fostering a long-term love of music. For adult learners, lessons are respectful, flexible and supportive, recognising that many adults return to learning with specific goals or past experiences. There is no such thing as being “too late” to learn the piano, and many adult students find lessons both rewarding and relaxing.

Parents are always welcome to discuss progress, goals or practice strategies, and open communication is encouraged. I am happy to offer advice on practice routines, suitable repertoire and, where appropriate, guidance on choosing or maintaining a piano or keyboard at home.
Lesson fees are £20 for a 30-minute session and are charged half-termly in advance, providing clarity and consistency for both students and families. Availability is limited to ensure each student receives the attention and continuity they deserve.
