A piano key that refuses to return can turn a familiar piece into an awkward interruption. First, identify what is actually sticking
Owners often describe several different faults as a “sticking piano”. A key may remain depressed after being played, rise slowly, feel tight at the sides, or fail to produce a note. The sustain pedal may stay down, feel reluctant to lift, or make notes ring on after the foot has been removed. In an upright piano, a note may continue to sound because a damper is not returning properly, even though the key itself comes back into place.

Elsewhere in the action, the centres of moving parts can become tight. This is often called centre-pin friction. The problem may affect a single note, a section of the keyboard or, in more severe conditions, much of the action.
The temptation is to force the key repeatedly until it frees itself. That can damage delicate components or disguise a fault that requires proper regulation. Spilt liquid is more serious. Tea, soft drinks and cleaning fluids can seep between keys and leave residues that make surfaces tacky or cause timber to swell. Even if the keys appear clean afterwards, liquid may have reached the key bushes or action below. Do not flood the area with water or household cleaner in an effort to remove it. Excess moisture can extend the damage.
Wear and age can also play a part. Key bushes gradually compress, action centres may need easing or repinning, and small cloth or leather components can deteriorate. A piano that has given decades of service may need more than a tuning to restore an even, responsive touch. On an upright piano, the key may not be the source at all. The hammer mechanism, damper system or a misaligned part can impede the return. Next, consider recent changes. Has the room become unusually dry or damp? Has a drink been spilled? Was the piano moved for decorating, cleaning or an event? Has a key cover been closed onto an object? This context is often as useful as the symptom itself.
You may gently wipe the tops of the keys with a barely damp, soft cloth, followed immediately by a dry cloth. Keep moisture away from the gaps between keys and do not use polish, solvent, alcohol-based cleaner or furniture spray. The purpose is only to remove surface marks, not to treat a mechanical problem.
Then leave the piano in a stable environment and avoid repeatedly testing the faulty note with force. Repetition can loosen or bend parts that were merely tight to begin with.
